E-way bill generation rose 5.98 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 139.79 million in July 2026, from 131.91 million in the same month last year, indicating sustained movement of goods in the economy, according to Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) data.

The July tally was the second-highest monthly e-way bill generation so far, after 140.60 million recorded in March 2026.

An e-way bill is an electronic document required for the movement of goods under the GST regime, with an e-way bill mandatory for inter-state movement of goods where the consignment value exceeds Rs 50,000. The threshold for intra-state movement varies across states.

On a sequential basis, e-way bill generation increased 2.21 per cent in July from 136.77 million in June.

Pratik Jain, partner, PwC India, said 5.98 per cent year-on-year growth in e-way bills, coupled with a sequential increase over June, suggests that domestic trade and supply chains remain resilient.

“It might point towards robust GST collections for August as well, although the eventual revenues will depend on the value and composition of transactions,” he added.

Saurabh Agarwal, tax partner, EY India, said the sustained uptick in e-way bill generation is a strong proxy for economic momentum, reflecting robust movement of goods across the supply chain.

“Equally significant is what this signals on the tax administration front — the combination of rate rationalisation and tighter compliance enforcement appears to be translating into meaningful expansion of the taxable base, a trend worth watching as GST collections evolve through the year,” Agarwal said.

The finance ministry, in its latest Monthly Economic Review, said notwithstanding the uncertain global environment, the Indian economy sustained its growth momentum during the first quarter of FY27, supported by resilient domestic demand. “However, some high-frequency indicators, such as e-way bill and manufacturing PMI witnessed some softening in momentum. The Service sector strengthened in Q1 of F27, driven by supportive domestic and external demand conditions,” it said.

Growth in e-way bill generation in Q1 of FY27 slowed to 12.4 per cent from 15.7 per cent in Q4 of FY26.
